'Nine Lessons' over eight decades

Silent and holy nights come naturally during the holiday season and yearly at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church during Emory’s traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. The annual, Christian-themed service, adapted from the original celebration at King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, England, has been performed at Emory with candlelight, hymns, and Bible readings since 1935.

The 2009 Emory Medalists include an attorney whose lifelong relationship with Emory will positively impact students for generations to come, and an ordained minister whose humanitarian work as the head of one of the world’s largest non-governmental organizations (NGOs) has improved the lives of more than 100 million people around the globe.

A personal 'Voyage' to Washington

After being sniffed by security dogs and emptying our pockets down to loose string and chewing gum wrappers, we trudged up two flights of marble staircases, carrying cardboard boxes, easels, and laptops. Breathless, we arrived at the Cannon House Office Building Caucus Room, then gasped again. The room was awe-inspiring—lofty ceiling, gilded moldings, crystal chandeliers—and already filled with people busily preparing for our November 18 presentation of Voyages: The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database.

Emory Cares bigger and better than ever

The seventh-annual celebration of Emory Cares International Service Day on November 14 drew a record 1,400 volunteers (1,000 in Atlanta alone). In 40 cities in nine countries on five continents the Emory community led service projects ranging from lakeshore cleanups to Habitat for Humanity builds. And EmoryWire has scores of photos to tell the story.

Calling all Oxford alumni mentors

The Mentor Program for Oxford College, an alumni volunteer initiative that matches Oxford sophomores with alumni professionals who provide career advice, is heading into its second year of operation. After launching in spring 2008, the program is reaching out to more alumni to take on mentoring positions. The aim is to foster an exchange of career-related ideas, friendship, and expertise.
