Record crowd honors newest medalists

With more than 80 years as Emory students, faculty, and administrators between them and countless more connections with alumni from across the generations, it’s understandable that a record number of guests turned out for the Emory Medal Ceremony, October 4, that honored 2007 recipients Bill Fox 79PhD and Dwight “Ronnie” Weathers 60C 62D 66D.

Discovering my fountain of youth

by Steve Mann 82C, reflecting on his 25-Year Reunion

As I move deeper into middle age, I find myself doing the things people do to “stay young.” I try to eat right (if I have to look at another piece of salmon, I’m going to grow gills), take lots of vitamins and supplements, exercise, try to get at least seven hours of sleep a night and I try to have a happy outlook on life.

Actually, they have seen Tibetan monks who are preparing for his Oct. 20–22 visit. The upcoming installation of the Dalai Lama as Emory Presidential Distinguished Professor, and the myriad events surrounding it have created a surge of anticipation at the University and in the Atlanta community.

Dine tonight by candlelight

Close your eyes. Go ahead. Trust us; we’ll wait. Okay, now open them. (Of course, your eyes are closed and you can’t read this right now … but like we said, we’ll wait.) Dark, wasn’t it? But kind of neat, right? Now imagine that darkness for half an hour the night of Friday, October 19. That’s what Emory’s campus is going to be like from 9:00–9:30 p.m. during Lights Out Emory, and alumni are invited—no matter where they are—to join in.

Letting her 'Guard' down

Natasha Tretheway won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry this spring for her latest collection of poems, Native Guard. Since receiving the award in April, Trethewey’s calendar has been understandably full. So, when Loose Canons, the English department’s newsletter, wanted to interview her, the publication aimed high, recruiting President Emeritus and Professor of English Bill Chace. The two spoke over the summer and their conversation went like this.

Emory fraternity makes it to the 'Top'

There is a healthy sense of competition among and within national Greek organizations, so when one school's chapter sweeps the organization's internal awards, it's a big deal. It becomes news. Like when Emory's Alpha Tau Omega chapter walked off with all of the fraternity's major honors earlier this fall.
