About Emory Cares International Service Day
Mission: Emory Cares is one of the Emory Alumni Association’s (EAA) signature programs. Through Emory Cares, alumni, students, parents, and friends gather to join in a day of service not just to their home communities, but also the wider Emory community. Emory Cares is one of the University’s most prominent vehicles for furthering its mission of serving humanity. By bringing together the diverse members of Emory’s family with a common goal of service, Emory Cares strengthens their ties to each other and the University while increasing Emory’s visibility around the country and the world.
In 2008, Emory Cares International Service Day was recognized for its valuable contributions to Emory University's 2008 Presidential Award for General Community Service.
How it works: Alumni volunteer service project coordinators in the U.S. and abroad are identified to coordinate service projects in their cities, with guidance and assistance from the EAA. The EAA invites all alumni, parents, and friends in each participating city via email and manages online registration for each city’s project.
For a detailed outline of the Emory Cares program, you can download our project coordinator handbook. Interested in serving as a project coordinator in your city? Contact Kerry Gallo at kgallo@emory.edu or 404.727.1154.

Emory Cares history: Emory Cares International Service
Day began in 2003 through the work of Renelda Mack 83C, then-president
of the Emory Alumni Board (known at the time as the Board of Governors
of the Emory Alumni Association). That year Mack initiated the
first Emory Alumni Community Service Day, which evolved into “Emory
Cares” and has continued to grow annually, both domestically and
internationally. Mack was awarded the 2006 J. Pollard Turman Award
by the EAA for not only her work with Emory Cares and her wider dedication
to community and University service. Other organizations that have
honored Mack’s service are the Girl Scouts of America, the NAACP,
the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council, and Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority.
