Sports "Through Her Eyes"

As a filmmaker and photojournalist, Elizabeth Stanton 99C realized she was a storyteller with an important mission. “Through Her Eyes: Sports in the Lives of Girls and Women” was born in 2002 as a documentary video and photography project “conceived to bring awareness and financial support to sports for girls and women around the world,” says Stanton.

Healing weekend warriors with PRP

Tennis elbow, jumper’s knee, golfer’s elbow, Achilles tendinitis, and rotator cuff injuries may be par for the course for the average middle-aged weekend warrior. Film the love of sports

On any given weeknight, high school students gather in stadiums and gymnasiums, on playing fields and in hockey rinks, on tracks and in swimming pools, and Jamie Murff 01C and his colleagues at PlayOn! Sports record the action for broadcast in markets nationwide. “This fall, PlayOn! will launch a nationwide network across cable, satellite, telco, and online platforms,” Murff said of his company’s goals.

Women on wheels

They’re tough, strong women with names like InSINerator, Bruze Orman, Surfer Rosa, Canna Whoopass, Bat L. Royale, Nattie Long Legs, Desi Scarnaz, Quadratic Abrasion, and Bullie Jean King. These Atlanta Rollergirls are Emory girls, too. Roller derby requires “core strength, endurance, power and explosiveness, agility, balance, stability, and footwork. And those are just the physical components,” says Cindy Fontana, a.k.a. InSINerator and the associate coach for swimming and diving at Emory Athletics.

Gaining competitive edge

Milliseconds can matter to athletes competing for titles and world records, yet even Little Leaguers and would-be track and field stars engage in the age-old art of athletic competition. Fueling the young athlete’s sense of competition, sports industry businesses promise improvement. “Even non-revenue sports like lacrosse are affected,” says Mike Lewis, professor of marketing at Goizueta Business School. “Parents are paying significant dollars to invest in their kids’ performance.”

For Katherine Constantine 98C, friendship with Angela Jackson 98C 09B became integral to her existence at Emory. “Angela possessed an intelligence, resilience, and sense of generosity that were unparalleled,” says Constantine of the friend she met in Turman Hall as an incoming freshman.

Singleton’s graduation from Emory College in 1901, Emory continues to excel as one of our nation’s top universities while proudly featuring an athletics program that engages more than 1,000 students and countless appreciative fans every year. But the initial introduction of intercollegiate sport to campus was fraught with controversy.
