To serve and honor: Emory commits to veterans

Wartime is often devastating . . . for children, for students, for families, for nations. Since the founders of Emory University came together to form a hospitable institution of higher learning in 1836, wartime has shaped its existence. But unlike other universities that may not have fared as well during times of national strife, Emory University has not only survived but thrived while honoring and supporting the military service and commitments of its students and faculty.

In your own words

Reflection means different things to different people. To some, the task serves up an opportunity to evaluate life’s choices, good and bad. To others, the process calls to mind a rolling tide of moments. To still others, reflection is an enduring pastime that strengthens memories. When asked to reflect upon their time at Emory University for the special 175th Anniversary issue of Emory Magazine, alumni drew into focus topics as diverse as multi-racial friendships, Northern infiltration of a Southern campus, earned trust, defining personal moments, and Nobel motorcades. At their core, these essayists reveal a deep, abiding love and respect for their alma mater. And in their own words, they share the many facets of the Emory experience.

Shh. . . it's an Emory secret

Since the turn of the Twentieth Century, students at Emory University have engaged in secrecy . . . for good measure. Like at other ivy-clad institutions of note, student leaders at Emory cling to the veil of anonymity through organizations such as the currently active D.V.S. Senior Society, Ducemus, the Paladin Society, and the Order of Ammon.

Cheer on the Eagles, unmask Dooley, run in Lullwater

Do you remember what was on your bucket list before graduation in May? What’s the one thing you didn’t get to do as a freshman student, but you knew you had to do as a senior? With less than 200 days to graduation, Emory seniors are in the midst of completing their very own bucket list. Thus in celebration of Emory’s 175th Anniversary, the Emory Alumni Association set out to compile a list of 175 things seniors should do before they graduate. We have collected ideas through the EAA’s Facebook fan page from alumni across the world. Some ideas include trick or treating at the President’s house, viewing an art exhibit at the Michael C. Carlos Museum, and studying abroad.

Find your face in the original Facebook

“Will you sign my yearbook?” echoes through the teeming halls of middle and high schools across the country as classes come to a yearly close. In college, the annual yearbook takes on more meaning than a simple record of popularity and social standing. As President James W. Wagner wrote in the 2011 Campus yearbook, “Each class develops a distinctive identity during its time at Emory. This yearbook is just one more example of a gift toward a lasting legacy.”

Record-breaking participation for Emory Cares

On Saturday, November 12, Emory alumni and friends drew together to serve their communities in record-breaking numbers around the globe. As Emory Cares Coordinator Kate Gregory 09C reports, “I’m very proud to announce the final Emory Cares numbers. There were 1,660 volunteers total (1,130 in Atlanta) participating in 81 projects in 40 cities in six countries. This is a record number of total volunteers, Atlanta volunteers, projects, and cities. I hope you’re all as excited as I am to have another record-breaking year!” Since its inception in 2003, Emory Cares projects have involved more than 8,100 people in 56 distinct locations around the globe.

175 Connections: how do you connect?

“Emory’s 175-year history is really the sum of the connections of its alumni, students, faculty and staff. Even Atticus Green Haygood 1859C and Isaac Stiles Hopkins 1859C, memorialized by the welcoming campus gates, were classmates at Emory,” says Carolyn Bregman 82L, director of alumni career services for the Emory Alumni Association (EAA). “Our alumni have incredible stories to tell about the connections they’ve made at Emory. We’re collecting alumni videos, written stories and letters to share. Whether your first roommate turned out to be your best friend, or your sociology professor became your lifelong mentor, or you met the love of your life on campus, or your work colleagues are Emory grads, too, we want to hear from you. Send us your story!”
